But I know what I've missed. What people are probably most upset about Problem number three: Mass Effect 3 doesn't bring closure. In the initial sense, it absolutely doesn't, agreed. I resolved conflicts hundreds of years old, united the galaxy under a common goal, and before the final assault, I said goodbyes to the teammates who were there with me from the start. It had an air of finality to it, that whole part on Earth, but the ending ruffled things up and left us hanging in uncertainty.

I know this is stretching it a bit, but I don't think this is a bad thing. Bear with me, I fully understand why some think it is, and why for some it's even difficult to accept an end which leaves fates of favorite characters unresolved, and I had that feeling too, but The cause for this uncertainty was our final choice. And our final choice was bigger than our personal relationships, the Normandy, or a love interest.

I said goodbyes on Earth and by the time the Catalyst was done presenting the last decision, I knew I'd never see them again anyway. I loved how the flashbacks began at the exact moment I thought of this; it was almost creepy how the game read my mind.

Anyway, when I made the last choice, I wasn't expecting to see or save my crew, I was trying to save organic life in its entirety. It all boiled down to extreme altruism. And Shepard died in the end.

Well, in my end. Civilization was saved, and nothing else mattered to me. But then something weird happened, we saw the Normandy rushing away, carrying a bag of plot holes and crashing on a garden world right before the credits started rolling. I'll admit, this moment was a bit unexpected; seeing Joker and a few of my squaddies alive and well was great, but the scene took place too late. Now, the fan inside me started expecting more. And there wasn't. The camera panned over the Normandy and the beautiful skybox, and Faunts returned to close the game one last time.

People, including me, interpreted this depiction of a new beginning as a tragic end to the crew, but in the end, for me that mattered little. In a trilogy where every choice matters and even shapes the decision I make at the end, character-specific storylines fade away into irrelevancy. And for this, I want to thank Bioware. Seeing the forums I doubt myself; I don't know if this game is good, or bad, or something in between which will never get settled and be forever tainted by blue, green and orange explosions.

Not satisfaction from story or character arc closure, but a really deep choice I made while looking over the decisions and outcomes presented throughout the entire series. Unique feeling, miraculous even. Thank you. Oh, and I know I'm wrong for at least someone.

You will not have regrets about this decision though the in game decisions will keep you wondering. It is possible to jump right in on Mass Effect 3 and find it to be a great and engaging game, but without the events unfolding in the correct order, the beginnings of so many revisited characters and missions taking root, the running gags and subtle jokes and character insights, you will not wring the very last drop of greatness out of this game.

Clearly, I'm a huge fan. Understand that I loved this game. The writing, the characters, the decisions I laughed, I cried, I will replay it all. A little more than three years ago you were appointed the first human Specter Special Tactics and Reconnaisance of the Council, a governing body of several different alien cultures in the galaxy.

But your first task is to find out why human colonies are going missing, and how a turian Specter, Saren, and an asari matriarch, Benezia, have allied with a machine race, the geth, and endangered all the races of the galaxy. You succeed, and in the process make a team of friends who are the best of the best the galaxy has to offer. Together, you discover a shocking truth: Every 50, years every advanced culture in the universe dies off abruptly.

It's not the geth, but an even more advanced race controlling them: the Reapers. But no one wants to believe that this ancient race is anything more than myth. Not the Council, not the Alliance. They applaud your success, and hail you as a hero, but they want to blame it all on Saren, so you and your team's warnings go unheeded.

And the abductions continue. Entire colonies are wiped out. And then you are killed, and the fellowship scatters. A radical human supremacist group, Cerberus, takes your remains and, feeling you are the human race's best hope, takes two years and uses advanced cybernetics to ressurrect you. You recover, but the Council and Alliance have still done nothing, and faced with the knowledge that the galaxy is about to get wiped out, you must enter into an uneasy alliance with Cerberus to continue the fight.

You rebuild your team, add more team members and embark on a suicide mission to stop the harvesting of human colonies and shut down the Reapers.

You do the impossible, delay the inevitable. The abductions stop, but it's not enough. Six months later, the invasion begins. The intergalactic council has no choice but to believe you now, but it may be too late to change the fates of billions of people throughout the galaxy.

You must forge intergalactic alliances as either a benevolent peacemaker, or a stony hearted tyrant - if the races cannot stand together, everything will be lost. What are you willing to do, to sacrifice, to save the galaxy? Other races? Your friends? Or will you uncompromisingly stand by your ideals and all that you hold dear? Here's a developer that understands it's not just about the gameplay, but about the connection to the hero and story that makes a game great.

Those who import Mass Effect 2 games which in turn were built on imported Mass Effect 1 games will get the most satisfaction out of ME3. Import data reaches back to decisions made in both prior games and shapes the events and choices you will have to make in ME3, including who lives and dies, and what races survive.

Some choices, which seemed huge at the time, result in no real change in the events of ME3. Others, which seemed deceptively small, play bigger roles, and short of completely going back and replaying the previous two games, can't be changed. This continuity gives the whole story depth and weight, and of course incredible replay value. Many of the battle mechanics are the same as ME2, with some tweaks. The cover mechanics were improved, but became more twitchy.

For example, you could dodge from one cover to another without being exposed, but it's sometimes difficulty leaving cover when you have to that will get you killed. The mechanics of single and multi-player battles are the same, so people who are not comfortable with FPS game play should not feel alienated, and be able to jump right in to four-man Galaxy At War squads.

Melee mechanics were improved, giving you more options to beat the crap out of ground enemies. Best of these is the blade attachment to the omni tool and bio-blade for biotics. Some of the biotic powers got nerfed. Most apparent for me was Shockwave, which seems sadly ineffective now. I'm not going to go in the romances too much, but what is available depends on who your Shepard romanced in ME and ME2, or new choices may be available. So provided you didn't kill them off in ME or ME3 your ME love interest is available as are the love interests from ME2, though there are some which are removed from the equation.

Inter-character interaction was maximized with tons of dialog and team banter. Team mates move around the ship, and can be found in different locations doing different things, or having conversations with each other, most of them hilarious, particularly Garrus and Joker trading turian and human jokes, or Garrus and Vega having a friendly bragging rights argument in the mess hall.

ME3 also added a clever multiplayer twist: the military weight of your alliance is directly affected by your participation in multiplayer battles.

Key locations that Shepard captures in the story are maps that are revisited in multiplayer and you must battle to maintain these strategic positions through 11 waves of enemies. I am a bit annoyed by this: technically, it means that if you play this game some years down the road, fans will move on, and fewer people will be available for the multiplayer, lowering your chances of success. I haven't noticed any difference in the wave strengths thrown onto the maps for a two man team versus a full 4 man team.

The endings are probably the worst complaint I had about ME3. There are three that I know of, and it is not entirely clear which is the Good, the Bad, or the Ultimate ending. I felt that they were ambiguous on purpose, and that the writers were leaving it up to the player to decide, depending on how they played Shepard.
